Kindergarten Curriculum
Language Arts & Reading: Our Literacy program is called the Superkids. It uses engaging stories and activities to build a strong foundation of reading and writing skills. Our literacy curriculum incorporates thematic based activities. Some concepts we focus on are phonemic awareness, letter identification, letter sounds, correspondences, concepts of print, fluency, sight words, handwriting and journaling.
Mathematics: In our mathematics program, we use small and whole group lessons and activities. We teach concepts which include number recognition, counting, counting by groups, number writing, identifying shapes, patterning, sorting, measuring, understand math terms, time, money, addition and subtraction. Many of our mathematics concepts are incorporated into our daily calendar.
Science: We explore our science themes through hands-on exploration and discovery. Some of our themes include oceans, our Earth, insects, weather, 5 senses, rainforest, plants and animals.
Social Studies: Through our curriculum, we learn about ourselves and our place in our families, school, parish, community and world. Our students learn about maps, landforms, history, community helpers, celebrating diversity, cultural traditions and holidays.
Religion: We begin our school experience with the meesage that Jesus is our friend. We learn how to pray, daily petition, formal prayers (Our Father and Hail Mary), and the rosary. We learn about angels, saints, important bible stories and people, and Catholic holy days and holidays. Our students attend mass and learn hymns, parts of the mass, symbols in the church, appropriate mass behavior and K5 leads an All School Mass in the spring.
Specials: Every week, we attend music, computers, reading lab (incorporates library, technology and small group enrichment), physical education SMART board and Spanish. Once a month, we attend guidance
